Every day we like to shine a spotlight on people doing amazing work — both with Charity Miles and without. Today we’re featuring Debbie McConnell, a rock star mom and avid Charity Miles user.
Here’s what she had to say:
What is your greatest accomplishment as of late?
In the past three years, we have tripled the financial support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Clarksville, TN. We have also increased awareness through events, media exposure, and word of mouth. The end goal is the cure – and I am thrilled to be a part of getting there!
How did you achieve it?
A lot of talking! When we started, we spent a lot of time explaining what CF is. Now that Cystic Fibrosis is better known and understood, we can get right to what the CFF is doing and how we can help. 3. What motivates you to make the world a better place?
My three aunts – Lena, Betty, and Janis – and my uncle Robert all had CF. I see the changes being made by the CFF and the hope it brings to CF families. CF patients now have a much brighter outlook and an improved quality of life. The cure is within our grasp and I love that we are able to take an active role in making that happen.
What do you do to stay healthy and fit?
I walk and swim. This year, I will participate in the Aptalis CF Cycle for Life for the first time. I didn’t even own a bike! Knowing the CFF will use 90 percent of the funds we raise for research, care and education is a great motivator.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“No doesn’t mean no. It means you didn’t ask the right question.”
What’s your favorite aspect of using Charity Miles?
My favorite aspect of Charity Miles is the iPhone app. It is always with me, easy to use, and I can change charities with one simple swipe.
Who do you exercise for, and why?
I exercise for myself – it helps clear my head and gives me a break from the day. It is a huge bonus that my break is also helping others – and I love to multitask!
