Every day we like to shine a spotlight on people doing amazing work- both with Charity Miles and without. Today we’re featuring Rachel Bergsieker, an undergraduate student at Butler University and the Senior Regional Director for the Borgen Project (a nonprofit working to make the fight against global poverty a key focus of United States’ Foreign Policy.) In 2012, Rachel spent a semester abroad in Senegal learning about international development and interning with a local development organization in Fatick, Senegal. 

What is your greatest accomplishment as of late?

The work I have been doing in the fight against global poverty.

How did you achieve it?

I have been working hard to end global poverty in a variety of ways, first off, through my work with the Borgen Project. As Senior Regional Director, I have helped mobilize citizens across Indiana to learn more and get involved in the fight against global poverty. During my 9 months with the Borgen Project I have been able to meet with Congressmen/women, raise both money and awareness through fundraising campaigns and community outreach, and educate Indiana citizens about the facts of global poverty and what we all can do to help. Secondly, I have been working with Charity Miles to raise money for the World Food Programme to help alleviate global poverty while I am in training for a mini-marathon to take place in November.

What motivates you to make the world a better place?

My experience studying abroad in Senegal in the fall of 2012 motivates my work to make the world a better place, and specifically to make it a better place through ending global poverty. While abroad, I witnessed what true poverty looks like. Additionally, I had the opportunity to interview families affected by poverty. During these interviews, I heard heart-breaking stories about families losing children because they could not afford medical care for malaria, and saw the terrible conditions in which they lived, lacking basic sanitation and water access. Additionally while abroad, I had the opportunity to intern with a local development organization and therefore get involved in efforts to alleviate these injustices on a local level. Since my return to the United States, I have been dedicated to continuing this work and doing my part in the fight against global poverty.

What do you do to stay healthy and fit?

My favorite activity to stay healthy and fit is to run. I started running in junior high, and continued as a varsity runner in high school track and cross-country. Being in college, I no longer run in competition, but continue as a hobby. Currently I am in training for the Indianapolis Monumental Half-Marathon, taking place November 2nd.

 What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

What’s your favorite aspect of using Charity Miles?

Seeing the impact I’m making. It always amazes me to see how much I am able to contribute to these amazing organizations through the corporate sponsors. I love that I am able to contribute to a cause I am passionate about while doing something I love.

Who do you exercise for, and why?

Using Charity Miles I run for the World Food Programme because it allows me to contribute in the fight against global poverty and therefore contribute to a cause near and dear to my heart.
