Every day we like to shine a spotlight on people doing amazing work- both with Charity Miles and without. Today we’re featuring Katelyn Hughes-Lofton who is currently working for Milstien Properties as Assistant Director of Oasis, one of their private health and fitness clubs. Katelyn is very health conscious and is always actively trying to improve the lives of others and herself by sharing knowledge on foods and exercises. Helping others is always something Katelyn has been interested in from an early age whether it be mentoring a friend or donating blood – no act is too small for her.

What is your greatest accomplishment as of late?

Personally my greatest accomplishment has been taking care of myself and pushing myself to exceed goals in my personal and professional life everyday. We need to be aware of many things happening in the world we live in, from the toxins in our food and water, to the housing shortage, people on welfare and food stamps, high student loans, debt, sickness, the list goes on and on. We can each take little steps to make a difference such as advocating for a cause you are passionate about or volunteering for your favorite charity.

How did you achieve it?

Staying positive and using my support system of my husband, family and friends. Having a strong support team is huge in achieving goals, as much as I push myself, knowing others are counting on me or supporting me helps me push even further. I am blessed to have an amazing group of people around me who constantly challenge me and push me.

What motivates you to make the world a better place?

The biggest thing that motivates me is wanting to gain knowledge. I believe that everyone should have an equal opportunity to living a free and happy life. I was fortunate to come from a loving home, get a proper education and being healthy. I have realized that sometimes all people need is just guidance to reach their goals or having someone who cares and inspires them.

What do you do to stay healthy and fit?

Two years ago I started to take control of my life through health and fitness, I was inspired when meeting Kimberly Snyder who wrote the book “ Beauty Detox Solution”. She made me realize how much what I eat affects how I feel. I started my journey slow and steady, where I can today proudly say I have cut out all meat and fish from my diet, almost all dairy and I have lost over 40lbs. I have more energy and feel better than I ever had. I also pair my healthy eating style with regular gym work outs and classes. Recently after my wedding in June, I set a goal to run the ½ marathon this October.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Reading, Reading, Reading……..from reading I find I get my strongest advice, books speak to me now in a way I never understood before. Authors like –  Eckhart Tolle and Michael Singer have touched my life. The best advice I have learned is to let things go and stay positive; to not let your mind get cluttered with thoughts outside of your control, and to live every day to the fullest without fear or regret. I strive for this every day. If I don’t achieve it, I wake up the next day trying for it again!

What’s your favorite aspect of using Charity Miles?

My favorite aspect of using Charity Miles, is knowing that I am helping others on a consistent basis, it is going beyond the work site, or beyond donating blood, it isn’t just a once a month or twice a year volunteering, it is an every day reminder that people need help, and with the technology of smart phones, we have access to the world at our finger tips so why not just log in and hit RUN!

When I was in high school I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and was strongly impacted on what I could do to help bring joy to others. For our 3-month wedding anniversary my husband and I decided to fundraise for Habitat for Humanity and support Charity Miles. This will help Habitat for Humanity build affordable housing around the world.

Who do you exercise for, and why?

I exercise for myself, I exercise to feel my best and I exercise to motivate others. If I can inspire one person a day to change their life for a healthier one I feel happy, even if I just touch one person a week or month. Changing your life to be healthier and happier, affects all areas of your life and that is why I exercise.
